The University of Udine (UNIUD) is a Public University founded in 1978. In 2021, UNIUD had a total population of 15,661 students, distributed among 79 courses (40 bachelors and 39 masters), 16 PhD courses, 22 medical postgraduate schools, 17 masters. UNIUD is also a member of the National PhD course in Artificial Intelligence (Phd-AI.it), area of specialization Agri-food and Environment. 

In the last 10 years, the university has been involved in more than 400 research projects and has been constantly promoting dissemination and public engagement to boost the knowledge and awareness of citizens and economic operators. In May 2016, it obtained the HR Excellence in Research Award from the European Commission. All the research activities are strongly benefitting from a strong scientific network with other universities and research institutes as well as with private companies, especially in the agri-food sector, where a technology transfer to the territory is constantly promoted. In this context, UNIUD is member of 6 European Technology Platforms, 7 National Technological Clusters (C.L.An Agrifood, BIG – Blue Italian Growth, Energia, Fabbrica Intelligente, Smart Communities, Spring, Trasporti), it participates in the OISAIR Network which offers innovation services to companies based in the Adriatic-Ionian region, and is the founder of the Lab Village, a regional research infrastructure that hosts laboratories and an experimental farm in the fields of Agriculture 4.0, Robotics, Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. In 2021, UNIUD founded, in collaboration with research entities and companies located in FVG, the Data Science & Artificial Intelligence Institute to carry out world-class research and encourage knowledge transfer in machine learning and artificial intelligence in different application domains such as Agricultures, Health, Nutrition, Security and Safety. 

UNIUD employs 652 researchers and 543 among technicians and administrative staff. It is organized in eight Departments. 

In the last 10 years, UNIUD researchers have published 27,350 papers in peer-review journals and have filed 66 patents (30 specifically related to the agri-food sector).
