Wearable Devices: The New Frontier of Medical Care
Co-organized with Distretto Tecnologico Sicilia Micro e Nano Sistemi
Chairs: Sabrina CONOCI, University of Messina & Pietro Aleardo SICILIANO, CNR-IMM, Lecce

There is increasing research interest in innovative approaches for wearable biomedical devices providing continuous, real-time physiological information via dynamic, noninvasive measurements of both (i) vital signs (VS) consisting in physiological parameters and (ii) biochemical markers in biofluids, such as sweat, tears, saliva and interstitial fluid. Recent developments have focused on electrochemical and optical biosensors, together with advances in the noninvasive monitoring. Accordingly, wearable medical electronics has been widely used due to their capability of continuously monitoring the physiological conditions of individuals.

These sensor technologies have received much attention since the arrival of smartphones and other mobile devices, owing to their ability to provide useful insights into the performance and health of individual. Wearable technologies promising to revolutionize traditional medical practices representing a tremendous opportunity for developing innovative systems toward predictive analytics and treatment paving the way to new approches in personalized medicine.

In this Special Session an overview of most innovative approaches for wearable devices technologies will be presented and discussed.
